Brig. Gen. James Stevens Simmons (1900-1954) served as the first Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health from 1946 to 1954, when the institution becam an independent part of Harvard University. During World War II, he was Chief of Preventative Medicine for the U.S. Army. In 1949, he edited and published Public Health in the World Today. The Harvard School of Public Health began as a cooperative program between Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The School for Health Officers of Harvard University and M.I.T. opened in 1913 as the first formally organized school of public health in the U.S. The name of the school was changed to Harvard-M.I.T.
